The .45 only dented it and tore the bottom corner. The .44 magnum punched holes in it and wrapped the plate around the bar that it was resting against.

They're my old plates, got rid of them as soon as I was due for registration and bought the new style.

The .45 ACP couldn't puncture a license plate?? Was it hollow point?
I've seen 9mm Luger go through more than that.

Jacketed, they're not meant to puncture metal, they're meant for soft targets.

.22lr should go through a license plate though. Shit, I bet a pencil would go through it. Must have been where it hit (unsupported area of the plate)

These were just resting against another target's supports, but my grandpa has told me that in WWII, their .45's being shot by their 1911's wouldn't penetrate the German helmets (They would put rather large dents in them though), where as using a revolver gave them enough power to punch through. But either way, pistol rounds aren't meant for penetrating metal.

I have a WWII Nazi Naval Helmet. If it wasn't worth like 1200 bucks I'd go test that theory.

My Winchester shoots harder, more accurately, and holds more ammo.
Also more fun when cycling rounds.

There's no inherent difference between "pistol rounds" and "revolver rounds". The 1911 vs. revolver story would make sense if the revolvers were chambered in a magnum caliber with more energy than the .45, but if they were just M1917's chambered in the same .45 ACP it wouldn't make sense, nor would something in the most likely alternative, the .38 S&W.
Here's where the most common calibers top out:
.38 - 300 ft-lbs energy
9mm - 400 ft-lbs
.45 - 500 ft-lbs
.357 mag - 750 ft-lbs
.44 mag - 1000 ft-lbs
Long guns for comparison:
AK 7.62x39, AR 5.56x45mm - 1300 ft-lbs (considered "intermediate" calibers)
12 gauge - 2200 ft-lbs
.308/.30-06 - 3000 ft-lbs (run of the mill deer rifle, compare to the "mighty" .44 mag or "scary" AR-15/AK-47)

It's not the rounds, it's the guns. A revolver doesn't use energy from the round to blow back the slide to cycle the next round. The energy from the burning powder in the confined space does nothing but move the bullet out of the barrel.
Barrel lengths also contribute to how hard a bullet will be shot out of the gun, with a long barrel allowing the bullet to get the most velocity out of the burning propellant vs a short barrel.

Friend of mine wanted to check out his new armor piercing .44 rounds, so C-clamped two squares of 1/4" plate together at the corners and used that as a target. He fired and then felt a sharp pain in his thigh. The penetrator had slapped back at him. He inspected the target looking at the dead center hit and the first plate was penetrated, while the second had only a mark on it. Obviously the second plate had flexed and then spit the round back at him.
Note to self: used solid targets when testing rounds.

A revolver also loses energy where the cylinder meets the barrel and doesn't seal. That's why they measure muzzle energy, which is the weight and velocity of the bullet as it leaves the barrel. Barrel length does make a bit of difference, but you're generally talking ~5% velocity change.
There's a very interesting website that does real-world testing of a lot of the folklore surrounding firearms, basically a Mythbusters for guns, called The Box o' Truth. One section pits various pistol and intermediate-caliber rifles against a Kevlar helmet, including the 7.62x25mm Tokarev pistol round, which is relatively small but very high velocity, giving it disproportionate penetration for its energy:
